Downed Power Lines
Overhead power lines can be damaged by severe weather, ice storms, equipment failures or vehicle collisions. If you see a downed power line call, 9-1-1 immediately and then call Renfrew Hydro 613-432-4884.
Always treat downed power lines as live
Downed power lines are extremely dangerous — always assume they are live and capable of causing serious injury or death.
Anything in contact with a downed line — such as trees, vehicles, fences, or even the ground itself — can also become energized. Electricity from a downed wire can spread out through the ground like ripples in a pool. The voltage is highest near the point of contact and gradually decreases with distance. This is especially hazardous on wet or damp ground, which can carry electricity farther than dry soil.
Stay Safe — Keep Your Distance
To protect yourself:
- Always stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from a downed power line.
- Stay clear of anything that may be touching the line.
- Never attempt to move or approach a downed wire for any reason.
Vehicle Accidents Involving Downed Power Lines
If you witness or are involved in a vehicle collision involving a downed power line, call 911 immediately to report the emergency. While awaiting the arrival of emergency responders, take all necessary precautions to protect your safety and the safety of those nearby.
Always maintain a minimum distance of 10 metres (33 feet) from the downed line and any objects or vehicles that may be in contact with it.

If You’re Outside the Vehicle:
- Stay at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from: the downed line, the vehicle and any objects in contact with the line.
- Warn others to stay back and not approach.
If You’re Inside the Vehicle:
- Stay inside the vehicle until emergency crews arrive.
- Do not attempt to exit unless there is an immediate danger, such as fire.
If You Must Exit the Vehicle:
- Remove loose clothing that might catch on the vehicle.
- Open the door fully, using only the handle.
- Do not touch the car and ground at the same time.
- Jump out with your feet together, landing as far away as possible, without stumbling.
- Hop or shuffle-walk away, keeping your feet together to avoid step voltage.
- Move at least 10 metres (33 feet) away from the downed power line or electricity source.
- Wait for emergency crews at a safe distance 10 metres (33 feet) away.
