Safety Around Electrical Equipment
Throughout your neighbourhood, you’re likely to spot hydro poles and pad mounted transformers – locked green metal cabinets – that contain high voltage electrical equipment. Remember to never climb, sit on, or tamper with this equipment which can pose a threat to your safety.
Transformers

Transformers
If a pad-mounted transformer (green metal utility box) is located on your property, it’s important to keep the area around it clear for safety and accessibility.
- Maintain an unobstructed path around all sides of the transformer.
- Do not block or landscape in front of the unit — Renfrew Hydro crews may need immediate access for maintenance or to restore power during an outage.
- Never attempt to open, tamper with, or lean objects against the transformer.

Pole-Mounted Transformers
Typically seen attached to hydro poles, pole-mounted transformers also require caution.
- Treat them with the same level of care as overhead power lines.
- Always maintain a minimum distance of 3 metres (10 feet).
- Do not touch or allow objects (like ladders, tools or tree branches) to come close to these transformers.
These safety precautions help protect both you and utility crews working to keep your power reliable.

Substations
Substations are critical components of the electrical grid. They house a variety of high-voltage equipment, including transformers that reduce transmission line voltage to levels suitable for safe distribution throughout the city.
You can easily recognize substations by their secure fencing and prominent warning signs, which are there to remind the public that all equipment inside is electrically energized and extremely dangerous.
Stay Safe — Keep Your Distance
- Never enter a substation or attempt to climb the fence.
- Doing so can result in a serious or potentially fatal electric shock.
- Avoid playing near substations, especially with balls, frisbees, drones, or other items that may accidentally go over the fence.
- If you lose something inside a substation, do not try to retrieve it yourself. Instead, contact Renfrew Hydro for assistance.
Report Damage or Vandalism
If you notice any of the following at a substation: an open or unlocked gate, a damaged or cut fence, signs of vandalism or tampering. Contact Renfrew Hydro immediately. Damaged infrastructure poses a serious public safety risk and should be addressed as soon as possible.
