Electrical Inspection: A Legal and Safety Must
Electrical inspections are legally required in Ontario—and they’re one of the best ways to keep your home, family, and property safe. Whether you’re moving into a new home, renovating, or upgrading your electrical system, an inspection ensures your work meets safety standards.
Currently, inspections in Ontario are carried out by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). ESA inspectors review your electrical work to ensure it complies with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code, which sets provincial standards for safe electrical installations and electrical equipment.
What Requires an Electrical Inspection?
According to the Electricity Act 1998 and the Ontario Electrical Code (Ontario Regulation 10/02), an inspection is required for all electrical installations, alterations, and renovations.
This includes:
- Installing outlets, light switches, fixtures, baseboard heaters, smoke detectors (except battery-operated) and exhaust fans
- Adding new electrical equipment like heat pumps, water heaters, air conditioners, whirlpools, swimming pools or saunas
- Upgrading or changing electrical service
- Electrical work in new homes, additions or renovation projects
Who Needs to Request an Inspection?
Whether you’re a homeowner, landlord, contractor, or business owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure an electrical inspection is completed. This applies to:
- Private homes
- Rental and income properties
- Commercial and industrial buildings
How to Schedule an ESA Inspection
Booking an inspection is simple. If you’ve done electrical work—or hired someone to do it—you must contact the ESA to arrange an inspection.
