Ensuring Safety and Reliability Through Proactive Tree Maintenance

We at Renfrew Hydro are dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of safety, reliability, and customer service. To support this commitment, we conduct a Tree Trimming Program throughout the year that allows us to routinely inspect and trim trees located near our electrical distribution poles and wires.

To maintain safety and reliability of power, the town has been divided into three zones. Each zone is scheduled for tree trimming on a rotating annual basis commencing January of each calendar year. This ensures safe clearance around energized power lines using industry-standard line clearing methods performed by fully trained and certified arborists.

Tree trimming may take place on your street or in your backyard. When necessary, traffic control measures will be in place to keep roads and driveways accessible throughout the process.

To reduce noise disruptions, most work will be scheduled Monday through Friday between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. We do not expect any power outages as a result of this planned maintenance.

All work will be carried out safely and efficiently by our qualified staff and contractors. Brush and debris will be promptly removed, and every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to residents.

Please note: Renfrew Hydro has partnered with Davey Tree Expert Co. of Canada, Limited to trim the trees in your neighbourhood.

Zone 1: South of Hall Avenue East, North of Graham Avenue and South of Opeongo Road

Zone 2: North of Opeongo Road and East of Highway 60 to Town Boundaries

Zone 3: West of Hall Avenue, North of Stewart Street, Bridge Street and Raglan Street South (Highway 60)

Responsibilities of Property Owners with Respect to Vegetation

If you notice a tree that is interfering with our power lines or poses a hazard, report it to 613-432-4884.

Caring for your Property

Customers are responsible for tree trimming or maintenance of trees and vegetation on customer property.  We recommend that you hire a qualified contractor to do vegetation management work near privately-owned power lines.  Contact us to temporarily disconnect your electrical service during maintenance.  Renfrew Hydro will provide one free temporary disconnect of your electricity service per year.

If you would like work done on a tree close to power lines and are unsure as to whom is responsible, submit a tree trimming request online and we will help you to assess the situation and determine the appropriate party to assist you with your request.

Safety First: Tree Work Near Power Lines Requires Professionals

If you’re responsible for trees or branches near power lines, it’s critical to use trained professionals. Mistakes can be deadly. Here’s what to avoid:

  • Cutting branches near power lines: Falling branches can swing or drop too close to live wires, causing a dangerous arc flash — a sudden electrical explosion that can lead to serious injury or death.
  • Falling trees near power lines (within 10 metres): Only qualified arborists know how to safely control the direction of a falling tree. A miscalculated cut could bring the tree down on or near a power line, causing major damage and putting lives at risk.
  • Using tools near power lines: Electricity always finds the fastest path to the ground. Tools like ladders or long-handled shears can conduct electricity if they get too close to a wire, which may cause serious injury or death.

It is important to always stay safe — and leave work near power lines to professionals.
