Our History

Renfrew Hydro Inc. is built on nearly two centuries of local energy innovation and community service.

The story begins in 1825, when the site of today’s hydroelectric dam in Renfrew was first recognized for its water power potential. Over the decades, the Bonnechere River fueled local industry — turning millstones, powering machinery, and even transporting logs downstream from Algonquin Park to the Ottawa River.

In 1853, the area around the river’s waterfalls, once known as “Rose Tree Falls,” began to develop industrially. This period saw the construction of the McDougall Mill, a key part of the town’s early economy that still stands today.

A major step toward modern hydroelectric power came in 1901, when the Renfrew Power Company commissioned the construction of a dam and generator house. That original structure, a testament to lasting engineering, continues to generate power more than a century later.

In 1910 Town Council secured land and water rights to build the Upper Plant, dam and adjoining canal creating a community-owned reservoir ensuring a reliable water supply in all conditions.

As Ontario’s electricity industry evolved, so too did the responsibilities of power providers. In November 2000, electricity distribution in the town was officially transferred to Renfrew Hydro Inc., while power generation operations became the responsibility of Renfrew Power Generation Inc.

Today, Renfrew Hydro Inc. serves over 4,400 customers with safe, reliable electricity. With a dedicated local team and deep historical roots, we continue to play a vital role in Renfrew’s development — just as we have for over 120 years.
