Overhead Power Lines
Know the risks: Stay safe around power lines and electrical equipment
It’s essential to stay safe not only around overhead power lines, but also near all parts of the electrical distribution system.

Minimum safe distance from power lines | |
---|---|
Power line voltage | Distance in metres |
Lower than 750 volts | 1.0 (3 ft.) |
750 – 150,000 | 3.0 (10 ft.) |
150,001 – 250,000 | 4.5 (15 ft.) |
250,001 and higher | 6.0 (20 ft.) |
These minimum safe distances apply not only to people but also to tools, trees, and toys. When using tools like ladders or tree clippers, always keep them well away from overhead power lines; likewise, make sure children avoid flying kites or playing with any aerial toys near power lines.”
Almost any material can conduct electricity to some extent. Always assume that any object touching or near an overhead power line is electrically charged. If you encounter an object in contact with power lines, contact Renfrew Hydro for help and keep a safe distance from both the power lines and the object.
Tree Safety Near Power Lines
Trees close to or touching overhead power lines can disrupt power and create serious safety risks. To reduce these hazards, Renfrew Hydro runs a rotating annual tree trimming program.
If you need to prune trees near power lines, exercise extreme caution. Never attempt to prune if any part of the tree is within 3 metres (10 feet) of a power line—this is Renfrew Hydro’s safety clearance zone. Instead, submit a tree trimming request online. If you are pruning yourself, be sure neither you, your ladder, nor your tools enter the clearance area.
If you’re unsure whether a tree is safe to prune, contact us for guidance.
